Sunday Rewind 08.31.08

The story of Joseph is the final narrative in our Journey through Genesis. Last week, we met a young Joseph and saw the tragic consequences of a family being destroyed by tension.

It’s a story that gives us reason to consider how we handle the tension in our own families. One that reminds us that we can choose to live differently…that, by God’s grace, the tension can become triumph.

This morning, we fast forward about 20 years. The scene is Egypt, where Joseph has risen from slave to Pharaoh’s right hand man. Genesis 45:1-15 shows us an amazing story of reconciliation. It also reminds us of some things to keep in mind as we walk our own rod to reconciliation.

God can redeem any situation. Pain can convince us that reconciliation is impossible. But redeeming impossible situations is the whole point of the cross. If God can redeem Joseph's family situations, he can redeem mine. And He can redeems yours, too.

People change. Pain tends to lock people in a moment in time. But over time, things happen. On top of that, transformed lives are the evidence of salvation. You are not who you were then. Neither are they.

Reconciliation requires releasing control. Pain can cause us to pick up the grudge club. The grudge club gives us power, but it only results in isolation. As long as you hold onto it, you'll never be able to embrace relationship.

Healing takes time. We live in a world of instant expectations. But there's no such thing as instant healing. Think of reconciliation is a road trip. It takes time. Sometimes you hit detours. Sometimes there are serious uphill climbs that require everything you have. Sometimes potholes and fender benders happen. Reconciliation is a hard road…but the destination is fantastic!

My friends, God can redeem any situation. People change. And if we will release control and embrace each other, we will find God’s grace bringing healing and wholeness to our lives.
