My Utmost 1.30.08

Finding times of silence is such and important part of developing relationship with God. Listening for God's voice requires silence. But all too often, I allow the silence to be filled with so many other things.

Several years ago, I learned the value of extended periods of silence at a retreat I took in a former monastery which is now a United Brethren Church. Huntington University was, at that time, offering a class called "Spiritual Formation". Essentially, you lived the life of a monk for a week. It was probably the most eye-opening experience of my life. It taught me the value of spending entire days in prayer. There's just one problem.

I have found that unless I build days of prayer intentionally into my routine, they don't happen. So that's one of the changes I'm making this year. I have set aside the first Tuesday of each month as a day of prayer. What do I do in a day of prayer?

To begin, I get away to a neutral setting. Someplace where I won't be distracted by telephones, computers, people, or "to do" lists. Then, to frame the day, I use A Guide to Prayer for Ministers and Other Servants. It's a year-long devotional guide that includes outlines for montly prayer retreats. Essentially, I read Scripture, reflect on what I've read and spend some time journaling. But mostly, I listen.

So, next Tuesday, I'll head out after the kids leave for school. Sometimes I fast over lunch, but I leave that up to God to decide on that day. I'll get back in time for supper.

Where am I going? I'll tell you that in next weeks' "My Utmost" post.
