A Helpful Lyric

This is a very busy season for me.

Over the next two weeks, I am serving communion to about 25 people who are unable to attend worship due to physical constraints. It's always a blessing to do this, but it also takes a considerable amount of time. Meanwhile, the ordinary tasks that must be done each week still need to be completed. In addition, I'm discovering the stress of Little League baseball (cf. yesterday's entry). Consequently, I'm feeling spent.

Then, this morning, I came across the lyrics of an old song in my devotional reading. I hope you find it as helpful as I did:

O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

I'll never forget the first time I heard this hymn. I thought it was absolutely dreadful. If I remember correctly, it is written in the most difficult key to play, (at least in the Baptist Hymnal) and the chord progression breaks every rule I ever learned.

But like you, I've come to love this hymn and thanks to you, I'll have it stuck in my head all day, dissonants (sp?) and all.
