Sunday Rewind 8.24.08

Our "Journey thru Genesis" has brought us to the story of a young Joseph. And it isn't a pretty story. Genesis 37:2-28 is filled with tension. It shows the tragic consequences of family tension gone wild.

Joseph can't control his tongue. Israel (Jacob) can't control his favoritism. The brothers can't control their hatred. And, in the end, a family that is connected by flesh, blood and convenant, is torn apart by tension.

It's an ugly story that challenges us to consider the tensions in our own families. And it reminds us that although tension is part of every family, God's grace enables us to turn that tension into triumph.

God's grace enables us to love each other as ourselves. It enables us to embrace relationship despite the tension. It enables us to speak truth in love.

Imagine how Joseph’s family would have been different if Israel had loved all his sons sacrificially. Imagine how Joseph’s family would have been different if the brothers would have lived with the tension their little brother being selected by God to lead. Imagine how Joseph’s family would have been different if Joseph had acted and spoken lovingly.

Now, imagine how your family would be different…
