Sunday Rewind 6.29.08

Initially, I thought today would be about Isaac. But as I studied through the week I came to the conclusion that the story of Isaac’s conception was a whole lot more about Sarah and God’s promise than it was about child. And the key principle that emerged is: God brings life from barrenness and decay.

In a variety of ways, all of us eventually discover that life can become barrenness and decay. Abraham and Sarah knew all too well the disappointments life brings. As Genesis 18 opens, it's easy so see that Sarah has accepted barrenness as normal.

Then she hears a ridiculous promise. God says that she and Abraham would have a child in their old age. Her reaction? Sarah laughs in disbelief. But God makes it clear that His power isn't constrained by human limitations. Isaac is born, fulfilling God's promise. And Sarah's laughter is transformed.

Abraham and Sarah knew all about the disappointments of life. But in Isaac’s birth, they learned that God brings life from barrenness and decay.

Let me ask you a question: What ridiculous promise is God whispering in your ear? In the barrenness of your life, what are you haring God saying? I don't know the answer to that question. But I do know that God's promises, embraced by faith, open the door of hope and future.

God gave a child to two old nomadic farmers. And He can bring life out of the barrenness of your life, too. If you will embrace His promises by faith.
