Our "Journey through Genesis" led us to one of the most important characters of the Old Testament, Abram. As his story unfolds in Genesis 12:1-9, a key principle begins to surface: The place God is taking you is better than any story of your past.
While still living in Ur, Abram heard God's call to leave his family, fortune and identity behind and to follow Him to some other place. Abram heard God. Unfortunately, many people today don't. Many have allowed their lives to become so busy that there is no time to listen for God's voice. If you want to reach God's destination for your life, you have to slow down, open your ears, and genuinely want to know what God has to say to you.
After his father died, Abram decided to leave Haran in obedience to what God had told him to do. He didn't know where he was headed, but he knew he needed to step out in faith. Today, many people don't. When it comes to our relationship with God, often we know what He's calling us to do, but avoid taking the risk associated with stepping out in faith. But if you want to reach God's destination for your life, not only do you have to listen, you have to move.
God met with Abram at Shechem. He promised the land to Abram. And Abram began to act on God's promises. He traveled through the land, building altars, worshipping God, and marking the boundaries to the territory that would one day belong to his offspring. Oh, if only we followed suit. Instead of going public, many people forfeit God's destination for their life by refusing to act on God's promises.
Friends, the place God is taking you is better than any story from your past. But getting there is going to require hearing God's voice, stepping out in faith, and acting on God's promises.
