Superintendent's Nightmare

Schools are closed again today. It's a Superintendent's nightmare. And I feel for them.

The weather report last night said we'd have snow changing over to sleet and freezing rain before changing again to rain overnight tonight. What to do?

Playing it safe, they cancelled school. It did snow about one inch, then stopped. Now the freezing rain isn't supposed to arrive until sometime around supper time.

I was raised in Allentown, PA. We didn't have busses. In fact, I was in college before I realized anyone went to school on a bus. I always thought those were just for field trips. Since everyone was responsibile for getting themselves to school, the district had no liabilty issues, and school was rarely cancelled.

I know that some would say that school shouldn't be cancelled, no matter what. Some people say the same thing about church. But those people are almost always not the people who have to make the decision.

I agonize every time the weather is questionable. The last thing I want to have happen is for people to be injured on their way to church. So, when there's a potential decision to be made, I get up at 5:00 am, check the internet for the latest weather, call a couple people in different parts of the area for their input, pray, and make the call.

When I do, I can be sure of two things. Some people will agree with me. Some people won't. And both will feel pretty strongly about it.

So I feel for our superintendents today. And I've decided that instead of complaining about their decision, I choose to thank God for their role in educating the children in our town and pray for God's blessing on their lives.
