Certain incidents in life have the capacity to change us forever. Significant illness or the death of a loved one. Weddings or the birth of children. Graduations or moving across country for a new job. These are things that, when they happen, make everything different. Peter had one of those life-changing incidents while at work one day on the shores of Lake Gennesaret, known better to most of us as the Sea of Galilee. Here's what happened...Luke 5:1-11.
Peter was minding his own business when Jesus showed up and interrupted his schedule. Jesus took Peter through a series of faith steps..."Would you put out a little from shore?"..."Put out into deep water and let down the nets"..."From now on you will catch men." Peter said yes on all counts, and ended up being a best-selling author who people name churches after.
It's a fascinating story that gives us insight on how Jesus calls disciples. He uses his own standards, time schedule, and job descriptions. Jesus doesn't worry about how qualified you appear to the world. He doesn't worry about where you are in pursuit of your life's ambitions, and He doesn't worry about what it is you want to do. Instead, He simply invides people to follow Him, now. And when they do, He gives them everything they need to everything He asks them to do.
But responding to Jesus call includes more than releasing your sin to Him...it includes releasing everything into His hands. Your agenda. Your reputation. Your future. Essentially Jesus asks, "You're will to trust me with your death...are you will to trust me with your life?"
Jesus calls people in many ways. In the end, how the call comes isn't important. The important part is accepting Jesus call. When He calls, faith does not respond by complaining or procrastinating. Faith responds by leaving what you're doing, and going to fish where He has places the marker buoys.
