Scripture Lesson: John 6:1-21.

It seems as though many companies have decided it costs too much to chat with us about our needs. Welcome to IVR or "interactive voice response". It's a way to make us feel like we're talking to someone without actually doing so.

But when we need something, we want to talk directly to the person who can get it for us...someone who will really listen and respond.

Jesus often dealt with people in need, and there are plenty of stories that center on Jesus' compassion. I don't think these 2 stories are about compassion. I think they are about access.

In these two stories, John shows Jesus redefining Passover: taking the initiative of providing food in the wilderness and safe passage through the sea.

Think of it. The God of the universe has taken the initiative to provide us access. And we don't have to wade through a maze of messages and computerized menus. We bring our needs directly through prayer, and the one who knows what we need even before we do makes a connection with us.

We serve a God who is always there for us. As God's customer service reps here on earth, shouldn't we be as accessible to others in need?
