Sunday Rewind 5.31.09

Not long ago, being a member of an organization was important to people. Today, membership means much less, especially to those under the age of 40. In fact, many people today find themselves wondering why church membership is practiced. So, today, we wrapped up our series on “4 Significant Christian Practices” by talking about Church Membership.

Although Scripture does not specifically prescribe church membership, it does clearly support membership’s underlying goal...spiritual development. You see, membership is not about accumulating numbers, it's not about privilege, and it's certainly not about gaining power. It's a tool we use to help "continue to live" in Jesus (Colossians 2:6-7).

To do that, we ask members to affirm a variety of things:
  • Shared faith (Ephesians 4:4-6),
  • Shared doctrine (1 Timothy 6:3-5),
  • Shared standards (Ephesians 5:15-16),
  • Shared accountability (Galatians 6:1-2), and
  • Shared ministry (1 Corinthians 12:27).

Today, we received 10 new members into the fellowship of Prince Street Church. It was a great day!
