A Different Kind of Weekend

Weekends. They come 52 times a year. We look forward to them. We enjoy them. We wish they were always longer.

But this is Holy Week. That makes this weekend different. This weekend, we have the opportunity to experience the "real time" journey of Jesus from the Upper Room to the Cross, from the Cross to the tomb, from the tomb to the resurrection.

Last night, we remembered Jesus and his disciples gathering for their Passover celebration. We sang, read Scripture and gathered around the table for Holy Communion. But we also offered the ancient practice of footwashing as a way of symbolizing serving each other in love. It's a simple worship celebration that I really enjoy.

Tonight, we'll gather again to remember the agony of the Cross. It's an uncomfortable time. But it's supposed to be uncomfortable. The service is at Shippensburg Church of the Nazarene, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Tomorrow is a really weird day. There's nothing to do but wait. And again, that's the point! It's not just about remembering the events of each day. It's about building anticipation. For what?

I'm really looking forward to Sunday. I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers. I'm looking forward to hearing the story. I'm looking forward to singing together. I'm looking forward to the family meal. I'm looking forward to the celebration of Christ's resurrection.

So this is a different kind of weekend. And I'm glad it is.
