Sunday Rewind 03.01.09

God wants all of us to have big faith, and He's actively in the process of making that happen. One of the things He uses to grow our faith is practical biblical teaching. Take, for example, the way Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:24-29). This wonderful story includes a promise and a warning.

The promise is simply this...if you apply what you learn from God's Word, your life will withstand the storms of life. The warning is simple, too...if you only hear what God's Word says, your life will crash and burn.

Jesus' lesson couldn't be more clear. Still, for some reason, we've allowed ourselves to buy the lie that you get credit for just showing up...that learning more stuff makes us a disciple. But it doesn't.

Knowing more does nothing. Doing something about it is what makes the difference.

There’s value in quiet contemplation. But somewhere in our lives, we need to be exposed to people who are brave enough to make us mad, or guilty, or ashamed or something, so that we will become something different.

That's why it's so important to put yourself in environments where the Bible is taught in ways that go beyond information. Demand it of my. Demand it of your class leaders. Demand it of the people teaching your children.

What foundation are you building your life on?

If you do nothing but hear what God says, and does nothing about it. you’re like a person who builds his house on a foundation that will not survive a storm. Iit may look perfect for a short period of time, but it’s going to crumble.

You have to put yourself in environments where God’s word is taught in personal, applicable way because the storms are coming. The streams will rise. The wind will blow and beat against your house. And when it that happens your house will stand because it’s build on a strong foundation.

At the end of the day, it’s obedience that makes all the difference.
