Isaiah declared that Jesus would be known as the Prince of Peace. And yet, when I think about the story of Jesus' birth, I don't see much peace.
Mary was a teenage girl who found out she's pregnant...by God. That’s tough to explain. At 9 months pregnant, she's traveling on a donkey and giving birth in a barn. Meanwhile, the King is so intimidated that he orders every boy under age 2 to be killed. There's nothing peaceful about that.
Fast forward to today. People are stressed out all the time. We're making more money now than ever, but experiencing more financial pressure than ever. It has to make you wonder. If Jesus is the prince of peace, did he fail?
To understand Jesus, you have to understand the title, “Prince of Peace”. It's a title that comes from two Hebrew words: sar, meaning the one in charge; and shalom, meaning tranquility. Put those together, and Jesus is the captain of rest, the general of tranquility, the chief of wholeness, the lord of contentment. He is Sar Shalom, the Prince of Peace.
When we’re under the lordship of Christ, Jesus gives us an inner peace that goes beyond our ability to explain. The world may be going crazy. Turmoil may swirl around us. Our lives may be going haywire. Still, under the lordship of Christ, we can have peace.
Because Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Sar Shalom. In him we find comfort. In him we find salvation. In him we find peace.
