Return to an Old Friend

After a 2-year hiatus, I have returned to an old friend to guide me in daily worship, "A Guide to Prayer for Ministers and Other Servants". Here's why.

Two years ago, I committed myself to reading through the Bible in one year. It was a difficult journey that, by the end, left me missing devotional readings.

This past year, I have been working through the old classic, "My Utmost for His Highest". At first, I really appreciated the increased devotional reading, but soon missed hearing directly from God's Word.

My old friend does both. Not only that, but it also does a great job of focusing my attention on the season at hand. For example, this is the season of Advent...a season of anticipation, looking forward to the coming of Christ, not as a baby in a manger, but as King of Kings. And here's an excerpt from today's Scripture lesson (from The Message):
Walk out of the gates. Get going! Get the road ready for the people. Build the highway. Get at it! Clear the debris, hoist high a flag, a signal to all peoples! Yes! God has broadcast to all the world: "Tell daughter Zion, 'Look! Your Savior comes, ready to do what he said he'd do, prepared to complete what he promised.'"Zion will be called new names: Holy People, God-Redeemed, Sought-Out, City-Not-Forsaken. (Isaiah 62:10-12)

As for me, that puts today in perspective. What are all the trappings of this hectic time of year accomplishing? Are they clearing the debris? Hoisting high a flag? Signaling to all peoples?

Look! Our Savior comes, ready to do what he said he'd do, prepared to complete what he promised.

Am I ready? Are you?
