This Sunday is week 2 of “Zip It"; a series of sermons designed to help us consider not only the words we speak, but also the underlying causes that produce our words. This week, our theme is “Criticism Gone Bad”.
Have you ever said something that when it rolled out of your mouth, you were shocked at what you heard? Yeah, me too. So many times, our words cause incredible hurt. We say things that take life right out of people.
And so often, it’s the people who we are closest to that take the most damaging hits…you’re so lazy… you’re a bum… I want a divorce… I hate you…Why are you so stupid… I wish you were never born…
There is such a thing as constructive criticism, and it's helpful when it comes from a genuinely concerned friend, and offered as loving help. But, many times, our criticism moves from loving help… through petty nit-picking… directly for the jugular of destruction…
When we constantly criticize others, it's often we who are deceived and do not realize the damage they are doing. So this week, we’re going to look at three root causes of criticism. Identifying these root causes will help us not only zip up criticism gone bad, but also figure out how to turn that around and begin to speak words of life that build people up.
