Baptism is one of two practices Jesus clearly commanded the Church to practice. Consequently, you would think it would be a rather simple subject. But simple is far from most people's reality. Instead, it has been something that has divided the Church for years.
What is baptism? Who should be baptized? How should one be baptized? Where should one be baptized? The list of questions can become a minefield of disagreement.
Through the years, the Church has established all kinds of rules, adding all kinds of baggage to what used to be a simple celebration. Consequently, many people's perspective on the subject of baptism has been shaped largely on what their tradition has said about the subject.
One of the things that attracted me to the Church of the United Brethren in Christ is our tradition about baptism...be baptized. How? That's up to the individual. But how is an individual to come to a decision? Simple...read your Bible.
So, this Sunday, I'm going to show you what the Bible has to say about the subject of baptism. Then I'll encourage you to talk with God about how you should respond.
