Sunday Rewind 11.4.07

This is the third week in our series called, "Learning to Pray" in which we are working through Jesus' response to his disciples' request for him to teach them to pray. Today, we come to Matthew 6:11.

Some people find it odd that Jesus invites us to ask for things. Some are afraid materialism may sneak into prayer. Others, that somehow God isn't interested in the ordinary details of everyday life. But nothing could be further from the truth.

During Jesus' life, he miraculously provided wine for a wedding reception that was running out. He fed hungry crowds of people on a boys lunch. He even provided money for the disciples to pay their taxes. God is absolutely interested in the simple things of life. So he invites us to ask our Father for the things we need for today.

When you think about it, asking God for the things we need is an expression of dependence. People who live with very little have no problem expressing their dependence on God. But one of the challenges of living in a prosperous society is that our dependence can so quickly move from God to ourselves.

Upon whom are you depending for the things you need? God wants us to depend on Him for not only the big stuff, but the little stuff as well.
