Sunday Rewind 9.23.07

Many people buy the lie that this world is our permanent residence. They spend a good part of their lives accumulating a vast estate, and the last part of their lives worrying about it. The problem is that our time in this world is a temporary assignment. Think of it this way...

You work for a global company. One day, your boss tells you that you're being sent to a foreign country to represent the company for 6 months. That's an assignment that takes so planning. You need to rent an apartment, arrange transportation, and any number of other things to set up a place of operations for the trip. But you're going to do it as economically as possible, because it makes no sense to spend your paycheck fixing up a place your going to leave behind as soon as your assignment is over.

That's a picture of us. God has given the assignment of representing Him in this world. But it's a temporary assignment. This world is not our permanent residence...heaven is. We are foreigners, nomads, aliens here. The great people of faith have always recognized this. Check out Hebrews 11:13-16.

Since heaven is our home, we live for the future. Although we are aliens in this world, never quite fitting in, one day we will be home. Until then we have to think like aliens. How? In community, loving each other deeply from the heart.
