This is week two in a series of messages we're calling "The Treasure Principle" through which God is speaking to our hearts about the things that are most important to us. Today, we looked at Jesus' conversation with a rich young man who wanted to follow Jesus. You can read the story in Mark 10:17-27.
Looking at the rich young man on the outside, you'd be quite impressed. Here was a person who was very motivated to follow Jesus. He was independently wealthy. And he followed all the rules God had established. What a catch!
So why didn't Jesus enthusiastically accept such a disciple? It doesn't seem to make any sense. What would cause Jesus to turn him away?
The answer is love. Jesus knew that although everything looked good on the outside, that the man had a problem. His vision was blurred. Materialism was preventing him from giving himself fully. And Jesus knew that as long as the man's wealth was he treasure, that he'd never see Jesus for who He really is.
Here's how it works: Your heart follows your money. Money leads, hearts follow. Put your money in temporary things, and your thoughts, attitudes and life will be centered on those things.
But there's another option. Jesus offfers to free us from bondage to the temporary things of this world. If we will invest the resources God has entrusted to us in eternal things, the clouds will be blown away and we'll see Jesus for who He really is, the greatest treasure.
