This past weekend was an amazing time of remembrance and healing for me. I was asked to lead worship at the Annual Campmeeting held at Waldheim Park in Allentown, PA. Several things made the weekend particularly special.
First, it was a chance to go "home" again. I grew up at Waldheim Park. My parents had a cabin there. It's even for sale. We spent our summers on the grounds. Dad ran the pool. And I ran everywhere else, filling my days with swimming, kickball and general mischeif. For me, there are memories behind nearly every tree. And it was especially cool to watch my kids play the way I did 30 years ago.
Second, I had the opportunity to share the platform with my theology professor from seminary, Dr. Ken Miller. Many people have had a significant impact on my formation and preparation for ministry. But few have had greater impact than Ken. It was great to be with him again.
Third, I got to catch up with old friends. Some were my parent's friends. Some were mine. It's a weird experience reuiniting with people you haven't seen in 20 year. All had the same reaction...total surprise that I would be serving as a pastor. Many stories could be told at this point. Let's just say that I'm a great poster child for God's grace.
What a great weekend. I am thankful to God for the opportunity. I am thankful to my church leadership who was generous enough to invest me outside of the local church this weekend. And I'm thankful for great friends like Scott and Missy Schneck, who made our stay amazing.
