Scripture Text: Hebrews 5:1-10.
When I was delayed in Fort Wayne this week, getting home on time required two things. I needed someone with enough compassion to want to help. I also needed somone with the authority to do something about my situation. Actually, when we have a problem, those are the two things all of us look for, but rarely find in one person.
That was supposed to be the qualification of the Jewish High Priest. He needed to be sympathize with the ignorant and the weak. He also needed to be selected by God for that sacred office.
The writer of Hebrews shows us that Jesus is the perfect High Priest. He is both divinely appointed and able to fully identify with humanity. And although Jews have gone through a series of High Priest's, Jesus' ministry is eternal.
Regardless of our problem, Jesus has both the compassion and authority to help us. Sin has been dealt a deathblow. Our future is secure. So we are free to live in obedience, knowing that eternal salvation is available to all who obey Jesus.
That is really good news!
